Apple iPad
As we dawn on the release of Apple's iPad one has to ask themselves, is an iPad for me?
Apple says the iPad is ” most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price.” Sounds great! I'll take it. But wait, what exactly does an iPad do?
Apple says the iPad is “The best way to experience the web, email, and photos.” Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, even boasted in his keynote that the iPad is an exceedingly better way to browse the internet than a laptop or smartphone. He also claims iPad is a unique way to share photos viewing experience, and email is more convienent than any other platform on the market.
Design
iPad's design is sleek, thin, lightweight (only 1.5lbs) and slightly smaller than a sheet of paper. The iPad only has one button on the face, the home button. This button will bring you back to the home screen in an instant. The face is set up almost like the screen of a computer, it has a background of your choice, and all of the applications arranged in which ever order the user sees fit. The design is set up to make browsing the internet more like reading the paper, or a book. You can kick back with this, instead of leaning forward into your computer screen.
Photo Viewing
The iPad has made viewing and sharing your photo's a fun, and different experience.
Initially I was worried about getting all of my photos from my computer to my iPad. Apple has that covered. You can simply plug in your iPad to the computer and upload your photos. It will automatically upload them in their pre-assigned folders. If you are a Mac user than iPhoto will also upload your people, places, and events to the iPad.
Or, if you are like me and you have a SD card from your camera you store your photos on, Apple has you covered. It will cost you though. The iPad has an accessory that will allow you to plug your SD card, or the USB from your camera into the iPad via the camera connection kit. Pricing for this is not yet available.
The photo viewing screen in set up in folders that are displayed as stacks of photos. Open the folder by simply touching it, and view an individual photo by once again tapping it. You can view photos in either landscape or portrait mode. Viewing photos on the iPad is much more vivid than looking at a 4 by 6 photo on paper. It is a full screen on perfect color every time.
Have you ever showed photos to someone and you know they are bored? iPad makes viewing your photos and sharing them entertaining. The iPad has slide show options that you can use to view your photos. It has background music and even fun transitions to make your photo viewing very fun!
The iPad fails me in one level with the Photos. There is yet to be a way to print them from your iPad. There isn't an accessory yet that allows the user to plug in their home printer to your iPad via an adaptor.
Email
The Email on the iPad offers everything a computer would offer, but easier. While in portrait mode you can view not only your opened mail, but also your inbox, making skimming through easy. This is a major step up from Smartphone's. You can also view any pictures embedded in the message without downloading them first. If you like that picture enough, the iPad has made a photo app that allows you to save from right in your email.
One problem with the Email on Smartphone's is replying with ease. You will not have a problem typing a message with the iPad. It features an almost life-size onscreen keyboard, making it a breeze to type a quick message, or even a lengthy one!
The iPad's supports most of the major Email providers including Yahoo!, Mobile Me, Gmail, Hotmail, and AOL.
Bells and Whistles
The iPad has a lot of extras to offer. From the vast amounts of Apps designed specifically for this device, to music, video, and even HD YouTube! You video watching needs are met with the iPad.
Listening to music on your iPad is literally just a touch away. Upload all of your music from your computer, or use the iTunes icon to access all the music, and video you want (at a price of course).
Of course it has your typical calendar, note pad, address book and map. They are all done in an effective way, but not a reason to buy the iPad.
iBooks is a very exciting feature of the iPad. The user can choose to purchase a number of books and have them all stored on their iPad bookshelf, literally. Sitting back and reading a book on your iPad sounds leisurely, but the bright backlight my hurt the eyes after a period of time. Hopefully Apple has thought of this and created an App easier on the eyes than its typical backlight.
Browsing
Browsing on the iPad is probably its most desirable feature. To “hold the web in your hands” is going to be a great thing. No more hunching over to see the web page, or sitting at the desk to just browse around. You can also view all the open pages you have with a grid that shows thumbnails of those pages. With the iPad you can treat the web like you treated your newspaper. Just kick back, and relax! iPad makes it so simple to manipulate the page with the touch of your finger. The browsing on the iPad by far out performs and other platform out there. It is speedy, easy, and works with its user.
The Answer?
So is an iPad for you? That is your personal choice and is really defined by what you want out of this device. If you want an easy, fun, and fast way to do all general things you use your computer for (mail, browsing) then I would say go for it. The iPad is not a replacement for your computer. However at just $499 I would personally love to hold the internet in my hands put my feet up and relax!
